Wytheville Community College (WCC), in partnership with the Appalachian Warrior Foundation (AWF), hosted the 12th Annual Dr. Thomas L. Barnes Veteran Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on Friday, October 9, at the Wytheville Golf Club. The event brought together golfers, sponsors, and community supporters for a beautiful fall day dedicated to a meaningful cause: helping WCC students achieve their educational and career goals.
Participants enjoyed lunch, friendly competition, and fellowship on the green while supporting scholarships that provide financial assistance to eligible WCC students. The tournament is jointly hosted by the WCC Educational Foundation and AWF in honor of Dr. Thomas L. Barnes and his enduring legacy of service to veterans, education, and the community. Dr. Dean Sprinkle, WCC President shared, “This tournament, established by Dr. Barnes’ family, is a great tribute to Dr. Barnes’s legacy and a wonderful way to support veterans, first responders, education, and our community.”
Dr. Barnes served as WCC’s Dean of Students and Director of Veteran Affairs from 1972 to 2004. A retired U.S. Navy Captain who served honorably from 1964 to 2002, he also dedicated significant time to local civic organizations. The Appalachian Warrior Foundation established the scholarship fund to reflect his lifelong commitment to service and supporting veterans.
"What began as a scholarship supporting veterans and military families has grown into a lasting investment in the future of our community. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors, and community partners, the fund has raised more than $100,000 over the past 12 years and now helps student veterans, military families, and aspiring first responders pursue their educational and career goals. This milestone reflects the enduring spirit of service and generosity that continues to create opportunities for those dedicated to serving others." – Andrew Barnes, Founder and CEO, Appalachian Warrior Foundation; former U.S. Navy Seabee; and Wytheville Community College alumnus.
Originally established in 2014 to assist WCC students who are veterans, military members, or military children, the scholarship fund has expanded to include eligible students pursuing careers as first responders, including police, fire, and rescue personnel. All tournament proceeds directly support student financial assistance. WCC and the Appalachian Warrior Foundation extend their sincere appreciation to every participating team, sponsor, and donor whose generosity helped make this year’s tournament a success. Their support helps reduce financial barriers for students as they pursue the education and training needed to build successful careers and serve their communities.
