Dr. Thomas L. Barnes Veteran Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament hosted by the WCC Educational Foundation & Appalachian Warrior Foundation. 

Where:   Wytheville Golf Club (WGC)

Time & Date: Friday, October 6, 2023, beginning at 11 a.m.  A light breakfast will be served beginning at 10 a.m.  

Cost: In celebration of WCC's 60th Anniversary, the cost per player will be $60. 

$240 a team ($60 a player)  *Veterans receive a discount. The discount is applied in the registration link.

Each player will receive a gift bag. 

Winners will be announced the day of the tournament.  Team winners will also be recognized on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2023.

Golfers may register through the WCC Educational Foundation prior to the event.

WCC Veteran Student - Frank Davis 

WCC is proud of our students who are veterans. Frank Davis is a 2018 graduate of Marion Senior High School. Shortly after graduation, Davis attended Marine Corp Boot Camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. During his military service, Davis served as a member of the military police at Camp Lejeune. He spent time in Norway where he was involved in logistics for sending supplies to Ukraine. 

Frank is taking General Studies courses at WCC, receiving support from the WCC Educational Foundation. He plans to attend a four-year university to study law or criminal justice in order to receive his Ph.D.

Dr. Thomas L. Barnes 

Dr. Thomas L. Barnes served as the Dean of Students at Wytheville Community College from 1972-2004. Along with serving as the Dean, he was the Director of Veteran Affairs for Wytheville Community College.  Dr. Barnes graduated in 1964 from Penn State University with his doctorate degree in education, afterward accepting the position at Wytheville Community College.  Dr. Barnes served honorably in the United States Navy from (1964-2002) and retired as a Naval Captain holding many high-ranking positions at various duty stations around the world.  Dr. Barnes led and managed various activities in Wytheville and surrounding county communities, along with serving as the president of the Lions Club.  Dr. Barnes was a soldier, educator, and community leader, and the Appalachian Warrior Foundation Scholarship Fund set in his honor provides the same opportunities for other veterans. Dr. Barnes not only served our country honorably but also helped to educate others along the way. Dr. Barnes was a dedicated proponent of higher education, and the scholarship fund will be a lasting symbol of his passion and generosity.
