Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation, in partnership with the Appalachian Warrior Foundation, will hold the sixth annual “Dr. Thomas L. Barnes Veteran Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament.” In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s tournament will again be offered in a different format that encourages social distancing and the safety of golfers. Instead of a set date and tee time, the tournament will allow golf teams to visit the Wytheville Golf Club anytime between October 1 and November 7 and submit their scores to the golf club. Winners will be announced on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2021.
The tournament cost is $55 per golfer. There are also tournament and hole sponsor opportunities. Proceeds from the tournament will support the “Dr. Thomas L. Barnes Veteran Scholarship Endowment,” which helps military students and their families continue their education at WCC. The scholarship recognizes the outstanding service of Dr. Thomas L. Barnes and was established to provide a permanent endowment to be used to provide financial assistance to U.S. military veteran students or children of U.S. military veterans who are entering or continuing to attend, WCC.
Dr. Barnes served as the Dean of Students at WCC from 1972-2004. In addition to serving as the Dean, he was the Director of Veteran Affairs for WCC. Dr. Barnes served honorably in the United States Navy from 1964-2002 and retired as a Naval Captain, holding many high-ranking positions at duty stations around the world. Dr. Barnes led and managed various activities in Wytheville and surrounding county communities, and served as President of the Lions Club. Dr. Barnes was a soldier, an educator and a community leader, and the Appalachian Warrior Foundation established this fund in his honor to provide the same opportunities for other veterans.
The Appalachian Warrior Foundation was founded by Mr. Andrew Barnes, Dr. Barnes’ son, who is also a Wytheville native and a WCC graduate. Mr. Barnes is a military veteran of the U.S Navy Reserves and currently serves as Wells Fargo Vice President, Enterprise DE&I Relationship Manaager. He is also a member of the Board of Directors - Veteran Team Member Network.
