On Saturday, March 9th the Wytheville Concert Series continues with an exciting program featuring pianist Judith Clark with Bryan, Kevin and Elizabeth Matheson. Over the centuries, the greatest violinists wrote or arranged music to show off their talents and dazzle the audience. Jascha Heifetz adapted Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous “Flight of the Bumble Bee” and the Mexican serenade “Estrellita” for violin; Fritz Kreisler arranged deFalla’s “Spanish Dance”; and Pablo de Sarasate wrote “Zigeunerweisen” or “Gypsy Airs. The twentieth-century violist William Primrose transcribed Weber’s “Andante & Hungarian Rondo” and “Jamaican Rumba” by Arthur Benjamin to help increase the virtuoso viola repertoire. Other works on the program are Robert Schumann’s romantic “Fairy-Tale Pictures” for viola and piano, and Bela Bartok’s ever-popular “Romanian Folk Dances” for violin and piano. Judith Clark will perform Franz Liszt’s Grand Etude “La Campanella” based on Paganini’s famous violin piece.
