Wytheville Community College was recently awarded $142,156 as a part of the G3 Planning Grant, “Get REAL: Relevant Employment for Advancement through Learning.” The G3 Planning Grant is a part of the Virginia Governor’s initiative, “ Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back,” that is proposed to provide financial assistance for training in high demand and high wage occupations. The grant is provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, federal Employment and Training Administration Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and has been awarded to WCC through the Virginia Community College System.
Each of the 23 Virginia Community Colleges competed for funds from the $5 million allocated by the Governor from federal workforce funds. Each college received between $100,000 and $500,00 to rethink and plan how training at Virginia’s community colleges support the growing demand for skills needed in the workforce. The Governor’s G3 planning funds will be used to establish levels of education at Virginia’s Community Colleges that will give individuals foundational skills that can lead to employment before they complete the program.
As a part of the planning grant WCC will expand upon its success in the VCCS Chancellor's Pathways Initiative that helped to define and provide clear educational pathways to meaningful careers. Occupational areas being considered as a part of the planning for the G3 Initiative at WCC are programs in healthcare, information technology, advanced manufacturing, public safety, and construction trades.
WCC is a seeking a 9-month G3 Planning Grant Coordinator to oversee planning activities and establish partnerships with business and industry leaders. The Coordinator will collaborate with other Virginia Community Colleges to standardize programs that provide training in identified career pathways. As a part of establishing in-demand training, the coordinator will work with faculty and staff to determine professional development opportunities and identify alternative course delivery options.
