In 2005 she won the Short Fiction contest hosted by Unisun Publishers and the British Council. The following year she won second prize in the Childrenâ��s Fiction category of the same prize. In 2006 Jahnavi was awarded a Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship to study Creative Writing in the UK . She lives in Bangalore .

One of the well-known fort hills of the State is Madhugiri in Tumkur district, which has the distinction of being the biggest monolith in the whole of Asia . A fort was built around 1678 during the reign of Raja Hera Gowda. According to historical records, this was further fortified by Hyder Ali, taken over in succession by Marathas and again by Tipu before becoming a part of the erstwhile Mysore empire. Though the historical significance has faded with time, it is today a fascinating tourist spot enticing trekkers and climbers. To climb the hill that climbs up a height of 3930 feet, walk through the entrance from the east between the buildings housing government offices and a series of well laid wide steps leading to the top. Several circular bastions on the way, provide place for rest, apart from a great view of the town below.

The most thrilling part of the climb is a steep section just below the top where small ledges have been carved to serve as footholds. With the wind trying to below you off, you feel greatly relieved to overcome this stretch.

On the summit is a temple of Gopalakrishna which is ruined but the circular granaries which were used to store ragi, oil and ghee are intact. It is well worth spending some time at the top looking at the smaller hills around and fields in the villages below. But the solitude is broken by the honking of buses below.

Bangalore City Project is happy to announce a fresh series of Urban Space Events (USE) for 2009, starting with a Heritage Walk through the Cantonment Bazaar. BCP plans to organise one such USE every on the last weekend of every month. Some of the USE held in 2008 will be repeated on popular demand and new areas will be explored as well.

'...The cantonment bazaar, a native town in itself, lies in a valley to the north of the infantry lines. It contains a commodious and well-kept market, the Bowring civil hospital, numerous imposing stores for the sale of European goods and large native buildings.' Rice, 1876

When modern (Kempegowda's) Bangalore was founded in the mid fifteenth century, Blackpally, today's Shivajinagar was pretty much a wasteland. The first settlers in the area set up a small village with a mud wall around it. In 1871 it came under the municipal administration of Bangalore and gradually became a service area of the Cantonment.

A thriving 'native' bazaar developed along with associated establishments like churches, temples, rest houses, cinemas, schools and hospital. Interestingly, the bazaar became popular with the Europeans as well as they couldn't resist the possibility of finding a bargain.

Join us for a walk through the area to experience a lively colourful bazaar and find out what remains of the past.

"Wildscreen Festival in India and Sri Lanka â�� 9-13 February 2009

The Festival was founded by Sir Peter Scott in 1982 and has been organised every alternate year for the past 25 years. Held in Bristol,the world's centre for wildlife filmmaking, it attracts hundreds of delegates from around the globe who work in film, television and the press, as well as those actively involved in working to conserve the environment.

The Wildscreen Festival came to India in 2007 and toured Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai. The programme included nine filmmakers, eighteen workshops, and seventeen film screenings a cross four cities, the main attraction being the Keynote address by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall.

The dates for the next festival are:

9-10 February 2009 â�� Delhi and Bangalore
12-13 February 2009 â�� Guwahati, Mumbai and Colombo

Nine environment filmmakers are coming to India and Sri Lanka from the UK. The programme will comprise of master classes on various aspects of filmmaking and film screenings.

The festival will be part of the media strand of the British Council project Low Carbon Futures. Its main focus will be capacity development amongst environmental film makers in India.

A lot of us have our own Ray favourites - the Apu trilogy, Charulata, Shatranj ke Khilari, Agantuk are perhaps the most often cited ones from over 30 films directed by the maestro. To extend that list of favourites, pedestrian pictures, as part of its Saturday monthly public screening, brings you a rare collection of Ray's short films and documentaries.

Rabindranath Tagore (1961/ 54 mins/ B&W) Documentary This documentary film deals with the life and work of the celebrated Bengali author (1861-1941) who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. The first section is composed of dramatized vignettes recalling the writer's childhood and adolescence: his private, domestic life. The second section, drawn from archived documents, shows his public life, emphasizing the great political movements in which he was engaged, and which led to India's independence. Two (1964/ 15 min / B&W) Short filmThis short film shows an encounter, through a series of games, between a street child from the shantytowns and a child of a rich family, stationed at his window. The film has no dialogue and the action moves through the attempts at one-upmanship evident in their successive display of their toys. Their rivalry (a kite shot down by a toy rifle, for example) concludes with the opposition between the world of noise (the toys inside the house) and that of music (the street child's flute).
Pikoo (1980 / 26 min / Col) Short film
This film presents a day in the life of a six year old child in Calcutta, who lives shut up in the family home, insulated from the city by a park. The father is away at work. The grandfather is alone in his room, ill and confined to his bed. The mother receives her lover. The child attempts to amuse himself, registers everything in silence before hiding out in the garden where he begins to make drawings of the various flowers. The film ends with
his question, addressed to his mother, in the arms of her lover: "Shall I use black crayon to draw a white flower?"
Sadgati (1981/ 52 mins / Col) Short film
Based on a short story by the celebrated Hindi/Urdu writer Munshi Premchand, Sadgati is a searing indictment of the caste system in general and untouchability in particular.
Dukhi, an untouchable, approaches the village Brahmin to request him to set an auspicious date for his daughter's upcoming wedding according to the Hindu astrology. The Brahmin promises to perform the task in exchange of Dukhi slaving over household chores in return. Already ailing and weak due to a recent fever, Dukhi agrees and begins with cleaning the Brahman's house and stable. When he is asked to chop a huge block

The human eye captures with emotion, passion, empathy and meaning. Let our eyes then locate the humanity in the everyday canvas that passes its scope. Complete The Story - This format devised internally by Yours truly theatre, combines improvisation and conventional drama, the actors perform a play in conventional style and at a crucial point of the story the performance is paused and the audience is invited to suggest an ending to the play. This ending which is decided by audience is then enacted by actors impromptu.
