Predominantly set in the verdant, politically charged landscape of Assam , yet constantly transcending the particular, the stories in Next Door are unerringly human. Subtle and evocative in their telling, they mark the introduction of a highly accomplished voice.

About the Author:

Jahnavi Barua is from Assam in the northeast of India and is passionate about the land she comes from. Jahnavi trained as a doctor but is now a writer, a reader, a mother of a six-year-old and a wife, not necessarily in that order. In 2005 she won the Short Fiction contest hosted by Unisun Publishers and the British Council. The following year she won second prize in the Children’s Fiction category of the same prize. In 2006 Jahnavi was awarded a Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship to study Creative Writing in the UK . She lives in Bangalore .

Punch him, knife him, run him over with a tank or -- God forbid -- stuff him into a nursing home. He will still spring back to his feet, like Rasputin defying his assassins. Seasoned theatergoers know that each resurrection of said feisty old man must be acknowledged with a congratulatory round of applause."

Call : +91-9986016207 S Surendranath (Suri) of Sanket, has adapted this hilarious but heartwarming tale into "Naa Thukaram Alla" in Kannada. Suri, one of the founder members of Sanket (along with Shankar and Arundhati Nag), has made a unique mark for himself as a fine writer and director. Most recently, he had the audiences in splits in more than 50 houseful shows of his adaptation of "The Comedy of Errors", tongue-twistingly called "Neenaanaadrenaanee nena".

Suri brings puts his uncanny aptitude at adaptation into full use while bringing Rappoport to Bangalore, more precisely Lalbagh. What the audiences are presented with is a bouquet of flowers – colourful, fragrant, wild, unusual, and an occasional (intentional) thorn! While you will laugh heartily during the play, you will happily let it tug at your heart on your drive back home and later.

B Suresha, Yenagi Natraj, Sihi Kahi Chandru, Megha Nadig, Balaji Manohar, et al, veterans on TV with roots firmly grounded in theatre don the roles to perfection.
Day Trek to Madhugiri - [1st Feb 2009]
Photos from past BMC trek
One of the well-known fort hills of the State is Madhugiri in Tumkur district, which has the distinction of being the biggest monolith in the whole of Asia . A fort was built around 1678 during the reign of Raja Hera Gowda. According to historical records, this was further fortified by Hyder Ali, taken over in succession by Marathas and again by Tipu before becoming a part of the erstwhile Mysore empire. Though the historical significance has faded with time, it is today a fascinating tourist spot enticing trekkers and climbers. To climb the hill that climbs up a height of 3930 feet, walk through the entrance from the east between the buildings housing government offices and a series of well laid wide steps leading to the top. Several circular bastions on the way, provide place for rest, apart from a great view of the town below.

The most thrilling part of the climb is a steep section just below the top where small ledges have been carved to serve as footholds. With the wind trying to below you off, you feel greatly relieved to overcome this stretch.

On the summit is a temple of Gopalakrishna which is ruined but the circular granaries which were used to store ragi, oil and ghee are intact. It is well worth spending some time at the top looking at the smaller hills around and fields in the villages below. But the solitude is broken by the honking of buses below.

Tentative Schedule:

16th Nov 2008:

6:30AM Depart from Symphony Theater, MG Road, Bangalore
9:00AM Have breakfast on the way and pack lunch.
10:00AM Start Trekking on Madhugiri Fort
02:00PM Start trekking down
05:00PM Depart to Bangalore. Things to Carry:
1. Min 3 liters of Water each
2. Snacks, Juice packs etc.
3.
"Greetings from the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan!

Bangalore City Project
presents a
Heritage Walk through the Cantonment Bazaar

Saturday January 31, 2009

Starting point: 3.00 p.m. outside Elgin Talkies

The event is open to all and there is no registration. For more information, please visit the BCP website: http://bcp.wikidot.com/city-walks:exploring-shivajinagar

Bangalore City Project is happy to announce a fresh series of Urban Space Events (USE) for 2009, starting with a Heritage Walk through the Cantonment Bazaar. BCP plans to organise one such USE every on the last weekend of every month. Some of the USE held in 2008 will be repeated on popular demand and new areas will be explored as well.

'...The cantonment bazaar, a native town in itself, lies in a valley to the north of the infantry lines. It contains a commodious and well-kept market, the Bowring civil hospital, numerous imposing stores for the sale of European goods and large native buildings.' Rice, 1876

When modern (Kempegowda's) Bangalore was founded in the mid fifteenth century, Blackpally, today's Shivajinagar was pretty much a wasteland. The first settlers in the area set up a small village with a mud wall around it. In 1871 it came under the municipal administration of Bangalore and gradually became a service area of the Cantonment.

A thriving 'native' bazaar developed along with associated establishments like churches, temples, rest houses, cinemas, schools and hospital. Interestingly, the bazaar became popular with the Europeans as well as they couldn't resist the possibility of finding a bargain.

Join us for a walk through the area to experience a lively colourful bazaar and find out what remains of the past.

Schedule:
3:00 p.m.	Elgin Talkies
3:30 p.m.	commence walk to Chandni Chowk
4:00 p.m.	Russel Market
4:30 p.m.	Adams Square
5:00 p.m.	St. Mary's Basilica
5:30 p.m.	Close event

Event partners: Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan; UDBHAVA forum; Elgin Cinema

The Bangalore City Project comprises a group of concerned citizens from different fields, including art, culture, urban planning and architecture, as well as various organisations such as the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan and UDBHAVA forum. It aims to create
awareness about art and culture in the City of Bangalore, by initiating discussions and programmes on a neutral platform - to publicise the importance of cultural infrastructure, as well as the history and importance of various places in the city that remain silent and veiled.
One of the objectives is to help create a unique identity for the City, a concept that will bear special significance for the future, as Bangalore grows in manifold directions and on manifold levels.
May we request you to give wide coverage to this initiative and also depute someone to cover the event.

Thank you in anticipation, for your cooperation,

Sincerely yours,

Maureen Gonsalves
Programme Coordinator
Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan
716 CMH Road
Indiranagar 1st Stage
Bangalore 560 038
Ph: +91 80 2520 5305/06/07/08-203
Fax: +91 80 2520 5309
arts@bangalore.goethe.org
www.goethe.de/bangalore
www.goethe.de/india "

"pedestrian pictures
invites you to
An evening of Satyajit Ray films

A lot of us have our own Ray favourites - the Apu trilogy, Charulata, Shatranj ke Khilari, Agantuk are perhaps the most often cited ones from over 30 films directed by the maestro. To extend that list of favourites, pedestrian pictures, as part of its Saturday monthly public screening, brings you a rare collection of Ray's short films and documentaries.

Venue: IAT, Queens' Road, Bangalore (directions to the venue)
Date: 31 January 2009, Saturday
Time: 5 - 8 pm

Rabindranath Tagore (1961/ 54 mins/ B&W) Documentary This documentary film deals with the life and work of the celebrated Bengali author (1861-1941) who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. The first section is composed of dramatized vignettes recalling the writer's childhood and adolescence: his private, domestic life. The second section, drawn from archived documents, shows his public life, emphasizing the great political movements in which he was engaged, and which led to India's independence. Two (1964/ 15 min / B&W) Short filmThis short film shows an encounter, through a series of games, between a street child from the shantytowns and a child of a rich family, stationed at his window. The film has no dialogue and the action moves through the attempts at one-upmanship evident in their successive display of their toys. Their rivalry (a kite shot down by a toy rifle, for example) concludes with the opposition between the world of noise (the toys inside the house) and that of music (the street child's flute).
Pikoo (1980 / 26 min / Col) Short film
This film presents a day in the life of a six year old child in Calcutta, who lives shut up in the family home, insulated from the city by a park. The father is away at work. The grandfather is alone in his room, ill and confined to his bed. The mother receives her lover. The child attempts to amuse himself, registers everything in silence before hiding out in the garden where he begins to make drawings of the various flowers. The film ends with
his question, addressed to his mother, in the arms of her lover: "Shall I use black crayon to draw a white flower?"
Sadgati (1981/ 52 mins / Col) Short film
Based on a short story by the celebrated Hindi/Urdu writer Munshi Premchand, Sadgati is a searing indictment of the caste system in general and untouchability in particular.
Dukhi, an untouchable, approaches the village Brahmin to request him to set an auspicious date for his daughter's upcoming wedding according to the Hindu astrology. The Brahmin promises to perform the task in exchange of Dukhi slaving over household chores in return. Already ailing and weak due to a recent fever, Dukhi agrees and begins with cleaning the Brahman's house and stable. When he is asked to chop a huge block
of wood, Dukhi's anger increases with each blow. Working in scorching sun, hungry and malnourished, the he dies. The corpse lies close to the road used by the Brahmins to go to the village well. What can be done with the corpse of an untouchable that no one will touch? Late in the evening, when no one is looking, the Brahmin ties a noose around
its ankle, slides it out of the city limits and sprinkles holy water on the spot on the road to cleanse it of the untouchable' s touch.

Venue: IAT, Queens' Road, Bangalore (directions to the venue)
Date: 31 January 2009, Saturday
Time: 5 - 8 pm

For more information, contact Deepu (94483 67627) or Siddharth (98802 76820) or email pedepics@gmail. com

www.pedestrianpictures.org for more information about the organization and the Saturday public screenings.
--
www.pedestrianpictu res.org
pedestrian pictures is a media activist organization working in Bangalore since 2001. "

"Invitation for5th Tri-Continental Film FestivalHu ...
"Invitation for

5th Tri-Continental Film Festival

Human Rights in Frames

"It was not just Mother Earth and her children who were pillaged by the coming of the machines. The bruise went deeper till it scratched, mauled and diseased the very heart of the universe. The Human Eye is fading. The eye as a mass of flesh and blood runs on the rudimentary mechanism of the camera- it captures the images that drift within its limited
scope. Apathy is the response of machines. The human eye is a whole different deal. The human eye sees beyond. The human eye seeks, probes, discovers. The human eye captures with emotion, passion, empathy and meaning. Let our eyes then locate the humanity in the everyday canvas that passes its scope. Only then will all the loneliness find empathy and a shoulder, only then will the drifted and displaced find a place to
belong, only then will the great burden of grief on the world be tempered with love. A wise man once said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Soul is never singular. Soul is the heart of the universe.

Tomorrow, look down on at the dirty pavement. I'll be crouched there smoking. If you look down and offer me a human gaze, I'll gaze back and somewhere between us you'll find the heart of the universe."

- Translated from the paranoia and prophesy of Baba Shivnaam Muhammed Francis

Each day one is confronted by sounds and images of senseless violence. Each day we descend deeper into a glass cage of Prozac emotions and well-worn clichés. Each day the humanity in us jades a bit. If we are to persevere, there must be defiance.
