Course Creation Checklist

You can use this list to help you create your online course. These items are not required, however it is recommended that you include as many of them as possible. If you have any questions or require other assistance, plase contact Jaime Shetrone at 223-4784 or wcshetj@wcc.vccs.edu.

Faculty Information

 

Have you included any personal information about yourself?

 

Does this information include the following? office hours (on-campus or virtual), email address, phone number, best way to get in touch with you

Course Information

The first thing you should add to your course is your syllabus. If your syllabus does not include the following items, you should also consider adding these:

 

an approved description of the course, including any prerequisites

 

an attendance policy

 

a grading policy, including an explanation of grading criteria

 

information about any required attendance

 

testing policies and procedures, especially if you require student exams to be proctored

 

a course outline

 

textbook information, including information on where it can be purchased (a link to the WCC bookstore is helpful for out-of-town students)

 

a course calendar indicating assignments, due dates, quizzes, tests, online chats, etc

For information on how to include downloadable articles in your course, please refer to Using Downloadable Articles in your Blackboard Course.

Structural Design Elements to Consider

 

Is your course information presented in logical sequence or in modules that reflect the structure of the course outline?

 

Do you provide transitions between learning components?

 

Do students know why provided materials (especially supplemental materials) are important?

 

Do you provide clear explanations describing what each file is, what programs are necessary to access it, and how the file fits in with the overall goals of the lesson?

 

Do you provide placement cues directing students to the next related assignment, reading, or course document?

 

Do you provide representations of materials that support all types of learners (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) when possible?

 

Do you include assignments and activities that encourage student particupation (e.g. dicussion board topics, group assignments, online journals, forums, etc)

 

Are there ample opportunities provided for feedback? (Especially important for online students)

 

Do you allow students an opportunity to get to know one another (perhaps through an in-person meeting, discussion group topic, or group chat)?
