Managing the Grade Center – Overview

The Grade Center for Blackboard 9 is similar to the Grade Center in Blackboard 8, with a few minor changes.  To view the Grade Center in Blackboard 9:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page to your right
  5. Clicking on the Manage button at the top of the Grade Center will bring up a list of options: Grading Periods (to define terms, quarters, semesters); Grading Schemas (used to translate percentages or scores into grades ); Categories (used to classify grades into groups that can be used for weighting grades); Smart Views (used to organize views based on instructor criteria); Column Organization (used to freeze/unfreeze columns, hide or show columns, edit categories of columns, edit grading periods of columns); Student Visibility (used to hide users from instructor’s view to reduce the number of rows for ease of grading); Send Email (allows instructor to send email while in Grade Center).

How to Create Categories in Grade Center

Creating Grade Center Categories

Instructors may want to create Grade Categories such as quiz, test, assignment, lab, or homework.  Categories are associated with Grade Center Columns, and can be integrated with other options such as Weighted Grade Column or Average Grade Column.

To open the grade center:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page to your right
  5. Choose Manage
  6. Click on the action link  and choose Categories
  7. Check the list to determine if there are Categories you’d like to add
  8. If you’d like to add new Categories, click Create Category
  9. Give your new Category a Name and click Submit to save your changes
  10. If you plan on using a Weighted Grade Column, assign each column in your Grade Center to a Category either through Manage > Organize Grade Center or through the Edit function in each column.

How to Edit Columns in Grade Center

Editing Grade Center Columns

Once Grade Center Columns are created the instructor may want to Edit the Column’s name or other attributes of that column.  Editing Grade Center Columns can include a variety of items which are listed at the bottom of this training document.

To open the grade center:

    1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
    2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
    3. Click the Evaluation link
    4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page to your right
    5. Click on the action link  next to the column name you’d like to edit
    6. This will open another screen with a variety of actions you can perform to this column
    7. Choose Edit Column Information to open the screen where you’ll make your changes
    8. Enter your changes
    9. Click Submitto save

Creating a Calculated Column in Grade Center

Grade Center – Create Calculated Column

Create Calculated Column for Blackboard 9 is used to create a column where you would want to add a column in the Grade Center to total, average or weight your grades.  To view the Grade Center in Blackboard 9:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page on the right of your screen.
  5. Select Create Calculated Column.  This option is used if you want to create a column where you will have Blackboard 9 calculate an Average, Minimum/Maximum, Total or Weighted column.
  6. Required fields for you to enter are Column Name and Points Possible.

  7. Other choices to make at this time would be:  Primary Display (choose Score which is default; Text; Letter; Percentage; Complete/Incomplete); Category (if you plan on weighting grades by category, this is important to choose); Due Date (students see this in their My Grades view).
  8. Under Options, you have three choices to select:  Include This Column in Grade Center Calculations; Show this Column to Students; Show Statistics.
  9. Once you’ve created your grade column, click Submit to save your changes.

Grade Center – Creating a Column

Create Column for Blackboard 9 is used to create a column where you would enter manual grades such as attendance or an assignment completed where a link was not automatically created in the Blackboard 9 Grade Center.  To view the Grade Center in Blackboard 9:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page on the right of your screen
  5. Select Create Column.  This option is used if you want to create a column where you will manually enter grades.
  6. Required fields for you to enter are Column Name and Points Possible

  7. Other choices to make at this time would be:  Primary Display (choose Score which is default; Text; Letter; Percentage; Complete/Incomplete); Category (if you plan on weighting grades by category, this is important to choose); Due Date (students see this in their My Grades view)
