How do I use the Blackboard Course Menu?

October 28, 2011 in BB Tutorials, Student

Overview and Navigation: Course Menu

The Course Menu, which appears on the left hand column of each course in which you are enrolled, helps you navigate your Blackboard course.

  1. Log into Blackboard
  2. Select your course from the Course List
  3. On the left-hand side, you will see the Course Menu. The name of the class with the instructor’s name in parenthesis appears with a grey background.

  4. The links below the name of the course are the different sections of your course Blackboard site. The instructor may choose to show different sections than what is shown here, or rename the links. In this instance:
    1. Home Page will always return you to the main page of your course.
    2. Information shows instructor contact information and anything else the instructor wishes to provide.
    3. Content lists everything the instructor has posted to the course, including a syllabus, learning modules and assignments.
    4. Discussions lists the discussion boards the instructor has created
    5. Groups lists any groups the course has
    6. Tools shows a list of all the different tools and functions you can do from blackboard, including blog posts, email and so on. The instructor may limit which tools you see.
    7. Help will link you to Blackboard’s help section, in case you get stuck
  5. To change the View of your Course Menu, click the icons above the course title, with a yellow background. The default view is list view. If you select the folder icon, you get folder view:

    This changes the Course Menu to look similar to Windows File Explorer:
  6. You can also have the Course Menu pop out into a separate window, by selecting the third icon
  7. The fourth icon will refresh the Course Menu and the homepage. This is useful if the instructor has added any information since the time you first logged on.

BB 9.1: Managing the Course Menu

May 10, 2011 in BB Tutorials, Faculty

The course menu appears on the left side of a Course and contains links to content and tools within the Course.  The instructor can add and edit course Content Areas, Tool Links, Course Links, URLs, and Module pages to the Course.  The appearance of the Course Menu can be changed by adding Subheaders and Dividers to organize the Menu Area.

  1. Log into Blackboard
  2. In the upper right corner ensure that the Edit Mode is set to ON. If not click Off, to toggle it to ON.
  3. Once Edit Mode is ON, you’ll notice editing tools next to each Menu Item.  You can use the arrows on the left to drag each menu item to reorder them.  The chevron (drop down arrow) on the right of each menu item allows you to RENAME, HIDE, or DELETE that menu item.  Be aware if you DELETE, all the content contained in that area of the course will also be deleted.
  4. Across the top of the menu are icons which give you additional editing capabilities.

    The icons are:  Create Item (which gives you the following drop down list;

    List View (which is your standard view);
    Folder View (let’s you view the menu in Explorer style with expandable folders);
    Display Course Menu in a Window;
    Refresh;
    Reorder Menu Items(which gives you another way of reordering instead of dragging).
  5. Make the desired changes to your menu using the tools.
  6. Click the Submit button and toggle EDIT mode off when you’re finished.
