Making Your Course Available or Unavailable to Students

All courses are made available to students on the first day of the semester.  There are occasions where you’d like to make the course available sooner, or make the course unavailable until your first meeting.  To make your course available or unavailable follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Customization link
  4. Click the Properties link which will open the Properties page to your right.
  5. Scroll down to the Set Availability section
  6. Choose the option you want next to Make Course Available and click Yes or No
  7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Submit to save your changes

How to Delete a Grade in Grade Center

Deleting a Grade

Grades can be deleted or reverted back to a previous grade by the instructor in several ways.  An instructor can delete the grade directly from the Grade Center or from the grade details page.

Start by opening up Grade Center

  1. Click on the grade that you’d like to delete in the grade center.  You’ll notice the grade will be highlighted.
  2. Press delete or backspace on your keyboard
  3. Press enter
  4. Click OK to NULL the grade value.  Grade values that are NULL display a (-)

To delete a grade from the grade details page:

  1. Click on the icon next to the grade you’d like to delete, clear or revert
  2. Choose View Grade Details
  3. A Grade Details screen will open with the choices to Override (designed to ignore the results of all attempts and display the grade as entered), Clear Attempt (designed to remove an attempt, such as a test, where a student can try again), Edit Grade (designed to provide a comment box, along with a place to change the grade).
  4. Select your choice, click OK to save changes
  5. Caution:  If you delete a grade, all notes associated with that grade will be deleted also

How to Add Comments to a Grade

Adding Comments to a Grade

Adding comments to a grade provides a way that Instructors can give additional feedback to students on their performance. Any grade entry can have comments added to it. Comments are entered through the Grade Details page or directly through the Grade Center. Comments entered in the Feedback to User textbox appear to Students and Observers when they access the grades. Comments entered into the Instructor Notes textbox cannot be accessed by Students or Observers.

To open the grade center:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page to your right
  5. Click on the action link  next to the grade where you’d like to add a comment.
  6. Choose Quick Comment
  7. A window opens up with Feedback to User and Grading Notes
  8. Enter your comments to students in Feedback to User text box
  9. Enter any notes to yourself in the Grading NotesGrading Notes are only viewed by instructors or anyone who would have access to the Grade Center such as a TA.
  10. Press Submit to save your changes

How to Enter Grades in Grade Book

Grade Center – Entering Grades

The Grade Center for Blackboard 9 is similar to the Grade Center in Blackboard 8, with a few minor changes.  To view the Grade Center in Blackboard 9:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page to your right
  5. If you’re entering a list of grades manually, be sure you’re in interactive view, not screen reader view. Interactive view displays the Grade Center similar to an Excel workbook, where you can enter grades and click on Enter to move to the next cell.
  6. Click in the cell, enter the grade and hit Enter to move to the next cell in the column
  7. Once you’ve added your grades in a column, you can go back to each cell, click the chevron (drop down arrow) and add a quick comment.  Grades are automatically saved when you move to the next cell.

How to Delete Columns in Grade Book

Grade Center – Deleting a Column

The Grade Center for Blackboard 9 is similar to the Grade Center in Blackboard 8, with a few minor changes.  To view the Grade Center in Blackboard 9:

  1. Log into Blackboard and open your course
  2. Navigate to the course Control Panel (lower left of page)
  3. Click the Evaluation link
  4. Click the Grade Center link which will open the Grade Center page to your right
  5. Click on the chevron (down arrow) in the grade column that you’d like to remove
  6. This will open a menu.  Click on Delete Column.  A warning message will pop up, click OK.  Be aware that this will also delete any grades or record of grades that have been entered in that column.
  7. If Delete Column does not appear in your list, the column is connected to an item that is deployed in your course.  You’ll have to remove the item from within the course, which will enable Delete Column in your Grade Center.
