Counseling & Advising

Counseling

Professional counselors and faculty advisors are available to help students with academic planning.

Counselors in Student Services work with faculty and administrators to provide accurate information to students as they make decisions about academic plans. Counselors maintain current information on transfer opportunities, careers and employment trends to assist students in making career decisions. All first-time WCC students have pre-registration conferences with WCC counselors to discuss career options, transfer plans, interests, curricular choices and academic preparation.

The counselors are also available to help students with personal problems.

Pre-College Counseling

Wytheville Community College cooperates with area high schools to provide pre-college counseling to students planning to attend the college. Counselors make regular visits to the high schools to keep students informed about WCC programs.

Advising Process

Students will be advised by counselors in Student Services during the first semester they enroll. After that, all curricular students will be assigned a faculty advisor who will assist them in scheduling classes, making schedule changes (add/drop) and completing withdrawals from college.

The advisor may also assist students with academic, vocational, educational and/or personal concerns, but will refer students to counseling as needed.

Students should maintain regular contact with advisors. The advisor completes the graduation certification for his or her advisees, so regular contact is of the utmost importance.

Handling Academic Problems

On occasion, students may have conflicts with instructors regarding grades or other classroom policies. Should a student have a complaint, he or she is responsible for following this process:

  1. First, the student should speak to the instructor as soon as possible after the problem has been identified. Students should request a conference during the instructor's office hours or request another mutually agreeable time.
  2. If speaking with the instructor does not resolve the issue, within five working days the student should describe the problem and explain the desired outcome IN WRITING to the division dean.
  3. Within five working days of receiving the letter, the division dean will investigate the issue and respond IN WRITING to the student regarding his or her decision.
  4. If the student is not satisfied with the dean's response, within five working days the student should describe the problem and explain the desired outcome IN WRITING to the Vice President of Instruction and Student Development.
  5. Within five working days of receiving the letter, the Vice President of Instruction and Student Development will investigate the issue and respond IN WRITING to the student regarding his or her decision.
  6. If the student is not satisfied with the Vice President of Instruction and Student Development's response, within five working days the student should describe the problem and explain the desired outcome IN WRITING to the President.

Within five working days of receiving the letter, the President will investigate the issue and respond IN WRITING to the student regarding his or her decision. The President's decision is final.
