WCC to Hold 2017 Beach Bash: 5K, Kids Run, & Alumni Beach Music Concert

Wytheville Community will hold the fourth annual “WCC Sprint for Scholarships 5K Run/Walk” race on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017. This year’s event will include a beach theme.

This family-friendly community event is a part of Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation’s ongoing efforts to raise funds to support scholarships for WCC students. All proceeds raised from this event directly support student scholarships at WCC.

This typically springtime event has moved to a fall evening run and will also include two new events for 2017. The “Chase the Wildcat” Kids’ Run will be held prior to the 5K, and children ages 12 and under will run behind the WCC Wildcat mascot on a short course. All children will receive a finisher’s medal.

This year’s event will also include a WCC Alumni Beach Bash Concert with the well- known beach band, The Catalinas. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and will continue until approximately 8:30 p.m.  The concert includes food and will be free, but donations for student scholarships will be accepted.  All WCC alumni and friends are welcome to attend the concert—even if you are not participating in the 5K race.

The 5K race and “Chase the Wildcat” Kids’ Run will begin at 6 p.m. near the entrance to Carroll Hall on the WCC main campus. Registration for the 5K is $20 per person through Sept. 21. The Kids’ Run is free, but all participants must be registered. Runners and walkers and parents of Kids’ Run participants can register for these events online at Paper registration forms are available in the WCC Educational Foundation on WCC’s campus in Smyth Hall. Registration for both events will also be held on race day from 5-6 p.m., and race day registration for the 5K will be $25 per person. Participants who register before Sept. 15 will be guaranteed an official “WCC Sprint for Scholarships 5K Run/Walk” race t-shirt.

Runners, walkers, and concert goers are encouraged to wear their favorite family-friendly beach gear including Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, and flower leis during the events.

For those who can’t make it to the race but want to support the 5K, the “Beach Bum” option allows registrants to support student scholarships without participating in the race. “Beach Bum” participants who register by the deadline also receive the event t-shirt as part of the $20 registration fee.

The 5K run/walk will be professionally timed, and the race course is officially certified by the U.S. Track and Field Association. The course was designed by seasoned runner and WCC criminal justice professor Richard “Doc” Weiss and includes parts on Rt. 365 on WCC’s campus, Main Street, 11th Street, Peppers Ferry Road, Community Boulevard, and the WCC walking/biking trail. Awards will be given to the overall first-place male and female finisher. First-, second-, and third-place age group finishers will also receive awards.

Currently, donations, assistance, and services for the event are being provided by the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, First Bank & Trust, Duchess Dairy Products, Food City, Depot Designs, Runabouts Sports of Blacksburg, the Town of Wytheville Police Department, and the WCC Police Department. Additional opportunities for sponsorship are available.
