WCC to Hold New Student Orientations for Fall 2017

Wytheville Community College invites all new students to attend one of the six scheduled Fall 2017 New Student Orientation sessions that will be held July 20, 21, and 28. These sessions are design to help new students get on track for success by providing them with the contacts, tools, and information to ensure a successful start to college at WCC.

Each session will provide information about academic advising; financial aid and scholarships; college policies and procedures; transfer assistance; how to access student email, Blackboard and Student Information System (SIS) accounts; how to obtain student IDs; campus tours; career exploration; student resources; and student clubs and organizations at WCC.

This year, new students are invited to attend orientation sessions according to their program of study. There will also be a session at the Crossroads Institute in Galax for students who will primarily attend classes at that location. All new students who are currently registered should receive an invitation in the mail and are asked to register for the appropriate session in advance.

“We are always so excited to welcome new students to WCC!” said April Mullins, WCC Counselor for Recruitment and Retention. “Our goal for this new orientation is to streamline the process for students to gather the information they need in smaller, more individualized settings, while providing different locations and session options as well.”

Sessions will be held at WCC’s Crossroads location in Galax on Thursday, July 20 at 9 a.m. (with lunch at noon) and again at 4 p.m. (with dinner at 6 p.m.). These sessions are for students who plan to attend classes primarily at the Crossroads location, and students may attend either session.

Students enrolled in occupational and technical programs should attend one of the sessions on Friday, July 21 at WCC’s Wytheville campus. Sessions will be held at 9 a.m. (with lunch at noon) and again at 1:30 p.m. (with lunch at 1 p.m., prior to the event), and students may attend either session.

Students enrolled in transfer and business programs should attend one of the sessions on Friday, July 28 at WCC’s Wytheville campus. Sessions will be held at 9 a.m. (with lunch at noon) and again at 1:30 p.m. (with lunch at 1 p.m., prior to the event), and student may attend either session.

Students receiving the Wythe-Bland Foundation Scholarship are also required to attend an additional meeting that will provide information specific to this scholarship and the related volunteer service requirement. Students can attend the meeting on either July 21 or July 28 at 12:30 p.m. For more information about these meetings or the Wythe-Bland Foundation Scholarship Program at WCC, contact Sarah Gibson, Program Manager, at (276) 223-4719 or email at sgibson@wcc.vccs.edu.

Orientation is required for all new students. Students are asked to arrive and check in at each orientation event 30 minutes prior to the start time, and they must register for the sessions in advance. To register for any of the sessions, go to WCC’s website link at www.wcc.vccs.edu/orientationfall2017 and select the appropriate session based on the field of study. Registration for these sessions closes 24 hours prior to each session. For more information or questions regarding orientation sessions or the registration process, please contact WCC Students Services at (276)223-4758 or email amullins@wcc.vccs.edu.
