The Wytheville Community College Support Staff Assembly is establishing a student food pantry on the main campus in Wytheville. A similar food pantry was established at the Crossroads Institute in Galax in 2008.
The purpose of the food pantries is to collect non-perishable food for distribution to needy WCC students.
As a kick-off event for the main campus food pantry, the Support Staff Assembly asks that anyone attending the free Community Halloween Celebration on the main campus on Tuesday, October 28, from 5-7 p.m. bring one non-perishable food item for the pantries.
“The Support Staff Assembly here at Wytheville Community College has worked tirelessly in an attempt to provide a food pantry for students who may be in need and who currently attend WCC,” said Gerald Goad, a member of the Support Staff Assembly and one of WCC’s Online Academic Advisors. “We feel it is incumbent upon us to provide this type of assistance to our students in order for them to feel inspired to succeed in their college studies—regardless of any current disadvantages they may be facing.”
Rhonda Keen, coordinator of WCC at the Crossroads Institute, said of the Crossroads food pantry: “There have been times when students—even though they were hungry—were hesitant to accept free food from our pantry. Those students, like all of us, do not want to be seen as ‘needy’ or someone who cannot provide for their families. In those situations, we encourage students to use food from the pantry and consider ‘paying it forward’ after they complete their education and are gainfully employed. We welcome students who have used the pantry to consider donating food for future students who may be in similar positions. The food pantry not only fulfills the students’ need for food, but teaches a very personal and memorable lesson about the value of community service.”
