The Futrelle Sisters are coming to the stage just in time for the holidays!  On December 5-6, Wytheville Community College Theatre will present Christmas Belles in Snyder Auditorium, at 8 p.m. each evening.

Written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten, Christmas Belles is the second in a series of comedies about the three Futrelle sisters of Fayro, a small town in Texas.

In this holiday edition, Honey Raye (played by Lorri Huffard) has taken over the direction of the Tabernacle of the Lamb’s annual Christmas program, much to the dismay of Geneva Musgrave (Carol Easter), who has directed the program for the last 27 years. Honey Raye is hoping her spectacular Christmas program will somehow help improve her local reputation, but the program is headed toward disaster of epic proportions.

Meanwhile, the rest of her family members are in equally stressful states. Frankie (Frances Moore), the youngest sister, is past due to deliver her second set of twins. Twink (Tina Edwards), the middle sister, is presently in jail for accidentally burning down a trailer park.  Amidst the Christmas Eve chaos, Frankie’s husband is stricken with kidney stones, a marriage proposal goes off the rails, food poisoning rapidly mows down the cast of the Christmas program, and a long-kept family secret is about to be revealed.

And that is just the start!  According to director Janice Pryor, everything that can go wrong, does in this hilarious comedy. “Rehearsals have been a riot,” says Pryor, “and the cast is enjoying this as much as we hope the audience will.” One of the writers of this comedy also wrote for TV’s Golden Girls, and like that show, according to Pryor, there are so many one-liners, “the audience may want to sit through it twice just to catch them all!”

Pryor says she was dubious at first about choosing this show because she was afraid folks might see it as too silly.  “But now,” she grins, “I find myself laughing at the same bits over and over.”  But are there any touching moments?  “Well, says Pryor, “there are a few . . . hmmm, okay, at least one!”

Others featured in the cast are Barbara Brown, Robert Burnett, Michael Easter, Clint Helton. Savannah Shaver, Sue Sprano, and Logan Thomas.  Roger Dean Grubb is designing and building the set, while Elizabeth Smith is providing the lighting design.  Running the lights for the show is Doug Brown, and the cast members have been helping out by coming up with their own costumes.

Christmas Belles will be playing December 5-6 in Snyder Auditorium on the WCC campus.  Tickets are $5 for general admission and $4 for senior citizens and students.  Tickets will be available at the door 30 minutes before each show.

Get your season off to a jolly start by catching the Futrelle sisters as they celebrate Christmas as only they can—with comedy and mayhem!  Pryor sums it all up, “After seeing what a mess the sisters make, your own holiday celebration will shine by comparison!”  Want more information?  Call 276-223-4795.
