WCC Offers SAT Math and Verbal Skills Prep Course
posted on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Wytheville Community College will offer a one-credit course this fall entitled “SDV 95-15: SAT Math & Verbal Skills Preparation Course” that should be of interest to all area high school students planning to take the SAT Reasoning Test and who would like to improve their scores on the test.

Interested students should register quickly, however, as this class is expected to fill up quickly.

Financial assistance is even available for Wythe County students who would like to take the course but cannot afford to do so. The Wythe County Public Schools Foundation for Excellence will provide scholarships and textbook assistance for students demonstrating financial need. Please check with your high school guidance counselor for more information or call the Foundation for Excellence at 228-5411.

The SAT course is scheduled for consecutive Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, beginning September 13 and ending October 18. The verbal skills portion of the course will covered first, on September 13, 20, and 27, with the math skills portion of the class meeting on October 4, 11, and 18. All class meetings will be held in Room 217, Grayson Hall on the main WCC campus.

Tuition and fees for this course are $87.15. The text used in this course is The Official SAT Study Guide by The College Board and is available at the WCC Bookstore.

Students who take the course are expected to see an average of an 85-100 point improvement. Pre- and post-tests are used to measure student improvement during the course.

The reading and writing portion of the course is designed to help students:

  • with sentence completion questions that test vocabulary;
  • improve comprehension for the passage-based reading questions;
  • improve writing by strengthening sentences, identifying sentence errors, and improving paragraphs;
  • structure the five-paragraph essay for a “timed test”;
  • improve the five-paragraph essay through revision and editing; and
  • improve coherence of ideas within paragraphs.

Also addressed will be the “stress” associated with taking a timed test. Students will learn test-taking techniques for both reading comprehension and writing. The course will explore suggestions for successful management of time, becoming “test-wise” in answering multiple choice math questions, knowing effective uses of the calculator on the math SAT, and “memorization or calculation” techniques.

Deanna Bradberry will teach the verbal skills portion of the course. She currently teaches English 11 at Rural Retreat High School, has been an adjunct member of the English faculty at Wytheville Community College for eight years, and has experience scoring the essay portion of the SAT.

For the math portion, the course is designed to help students:

  • strengthen basic mathematics skills and problem solving;
  • improve strategies for handling the toughest math questions, whatever their format;
  • improve solving skills for the trickiest “straight math” questions found on the SAT;
  • strengthen skills needed for solving word problems found on the SAT;
  • practice the tips and strategies needed for success on the SAT math sections; and
  • become comfortable with the methods of entering math answers on the SAT math grid.

Barbara Cassell will teach the math portion of the course. She has taught as an adjunct instructor at WCC for more than 20 years. Currently she teaches the dual enrollment pre-calculus and calculus classes at George Wythe High School. In the past she has taught SAT prep classes for WCC at the main campus and in surrounding counties’ educational centers.

Saturday…My Day to Wear the Underwear!

Former WCC Professor, Allen P. “Al” Jennings, has published a book about his life in Fries, Virginia. Jennings is an Associate Professor, Emeritus of Physical Education. He taught at WCC from 1970 to 1992. The college’s athletic fields are named in his honor.

My Day to Wear the UnderwearSaturday…My Day to Wear the Underwear!: A book about life in “old” Fries

My name is Allen Jennings (Al) and I was born and raised in the small mountain cotton mill town of Fries, located on the northern side of the New River in Grayson County, Virginia. This book is the result of my desire to record and share all that I saw, lived, laughed about and loved during my years in the paradise of Fries as it existed in times gone by.

The main theme is that of a mountain people who lived in a so-called “Utopian” cotton mill town. This was a paternalistic society where their very existence depended on a benevolent dictator who, behind the scenes, was the unquestioned ruler of the town. Many stories in this book illustrate the fears, insecurities, tribulations, disease epidemics, and hopes of life in a cruel and extended economic depression. Special memories of sons and daughters who took up arms in World War II and defeated the greatest military armies (German, Japanese & Italian) ever assembled in the history of mankind are recalled. Many sons of Fries made the supreme sacrifice for their country and came home in a pine box — as the old song says, “keep a light in your window tonight, your wandering boy is coming home”.

Some of the best memories are about individuals who had a great sense of humor, passed down the traditional mountain tales or just simply had a colorful or hilarious nickname. Occasionally the real names (or nickname) of persons described have been changed to protect their true identity. For example, when Thunder Gunter and Lightning Barrett really got caught stealing Ed Funk’s chickens!

This book also remembers some of the people who are “legends of Fries”, such as Chiney Alderman, Harve “Rattlesnake” Hendricks, Bruce Smith (renowned Chief of Police) and Gordon “Gondy” Carico, among others.

Fries is the most unique town I have ever known and I wanted to capture the simple everyday life, moments of comedy or joy or tragedy and the people who made Fries such a wonderful place. There never was and never will be another such town. It was the greatest — we had it all, except money of course! I was blessed to have been born and raised there and I’d like to share that blessing with you.

posted on Thursday, September 6th, 2007

From Southwest Virginia Today: By WAYNE QUESENBERRY/Staff

Sondra Harman always wanted to become a nurse but was concerned about money for her college tuition. As a senior at Bland High School last fall, she saw those worries disappear.

Harman is among 88 graduates from high schools in Wythe and Bland counties in 2007 who received full scholarships to Wytheville Community College. Their up to two years’ worth of tuition and fees are covered by the Wythe-Bland Community Foundation Scholarship Program.

“Now, I don’t have to worry about how I’m going to pay for my studies,” Harman stated Thursday morning at a celebration marking the establishment of the scholarship program. “I can put my energies on my studies.”

She spoke on behalf of the scholarship recipients in thanking the Wythe-Bland Community Foundation Scholarship Program board of directors. All the recipients were invited to the celebration and luncheon at the new Wytheville Community Center and many attended.
