WCC MONTHLY BLUEGRASS AND OLD-TIME JAMBOREE SET FOR NOV. 21
posted on Friday, November 13th, 2009
Wytheville Community College is sponsoring its free monthly Bluegrass and Old-Time Jamboree, this time featuring the bluegrass band Fescue and the old-time group The White Top Mountain Band on Saturday, November 21, from 7-9 p.m. in the George Wythe High School Auditorium in Wytheville.
“Fescue” was founded more than 20 years ago and has performed in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and West Virginia. The five-piece band’s stage show is comprised of a wide range of bluegrass music from slow ballads to hard-driving, energetic tunes. The band won first place in the Bluegrass Band competition at the Galax Fiddlers Convention in 1997 and then followed that win with another first-place finish in the same category in 2000. Fescue has appeared several times at the WCC Bluegrass and Old-Time Jamboree.
The White Top Mountain Band has a long history in old-time music. Three of the current lineup’s five members are Spencers—fiddler Thornton and his multi-instrumentalist wife Emily and their daughter Martha—complemented ably by mandolinist Jackson Cunningham and acoustic bassist Debbie Bramer. Emily and Martha split the bulk of lead-vocal and harmony duties, and they sing with beauty and intensity in the pure Appalachian style. The band sizzles without ever sounding soullessly slick.
Fescue will perform from 7-8 p.m. and The White Top Mountain Band will perform from 8-9 p.m. The doors will be open at the George Wythe High School Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to help defray the travel expenses of the bands.
